Economic Outlook and Growth Potential of India

Dr. Amit Kapoor shared his views at the 18th World Knowledge Forum organised on October 10-12 in Seoul, South Korea. India, the largest democracy in the world, has emerged as a game changer and a leader in the global economy and security. It is the fastest growing economy this year and the years to come, contributing to about one-fifth of Asia’s growth by the end of the decade. At the Davos Forum this past January Prime Minister Narendra Modi boldly positioned India as a key global player by calling for closer international cooperation, rules-based international order and adjustment and reform of relevant international organizations for critical global issues of climate change, terrorism and anti-globalization and protectionism.

Amit Kapoor, President of India Council on Competitiveness, Sripriya Ranganathan, India’s Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, and Florian Kohlbacher, Director of the Economist Corporate Network for North Asia will review and discuss the India’s economic and security importance in the world and in the region. The Korea-India bilateral relations will also be looked into for mutual complementarities and benefits, particularly from the perspective of Korea’s “New southbound policy” and India’s “Make in India” initiatives.

The World Knowledge Forum has taken on the role as a platform for discussions to reduce knowledge gaps through knowledge sharing, and promote balanced global economic growth and prosperity. A total of over 4,000 global speakers and 43,000 audiences have participated since the first forum with the theme of “Shaping the New Millennium with Knowledge” in 2000, and the forum has now become the biggest knowledge festival in the world.

Marking the 19th anniversary of the World Knowledge Forum, around 200 speakers and 3,500 audiences gathered to discuss various agendas under this year’s theme of “Collective Intelligence: Overcoming Global Pandemonium”. Speakers, Janet Yellen, Chair of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System (2014-2018); Kersti Kaljulaid, President of Estonia; Arancha Gonzalez, Executive Director of International Trade Center (ITC); H. R. McMaster, The 26th White House National Security Council (NSC) Advisor of the Trump administration; Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA); Rajeev Suri, CEO of Nokia; Kenneth C. Frazier, CEO of Merck & Co., Inc.; John Kim, President of New York Life Insurance Company; Jane Jie Sun, CEO of Ctrip; Wang Zhenghua, President of Spring Airlines; and Eric Allison, Head of Uber Elevate were present to grace the occasion.
